FFUN SDG at the NEW HSE Conference in Warsaw: Safety as a Foundation of Sustainable Business
Warsaw, Poland – 23 October 2026
The Foundation for United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (FFUN SDG) took part in the NEW HSE conference in Warsaw, Poland, contributing to the international discussion on workplace safety, responsible business practices and sustainable development.
Maurizio Aronica, President of FFUN SDG, delivered a speech entitled “Safety as a Foundation of Sustainable Business: From UN Goals to Everyday Decisions”, highlighting the strategic importance of workplace safety as an integral component of sustainable economic and social development.
From global commitments to everyday business decisions
In his address, Maurizio Aronica emphasised that workplace safety must be understood not simply as a legal requirement or an operational expense, but as a fundamental business value.
Protecting workers means protecting people, professional knowledge, productivity, business continuity and trust. Organisations that invest in prevention, training and responsible working conditions strengthen not only their employees’ well-being but also their long-term resilience and competitiveness.
A key message of the speech was that there should be no first-class and second-class workers when it comes to safety. Every worker, regardless of their position, contractual status or professional background, deserves safe and dignified working conditions.
The discussion also highlighted the growing importance of prevention in a rapidly changing world, where technological developments, evolving working environments and emerging risks require continuous education, preparedness and lifelong learning.
Recent industrial tragedies and the devastating effects of natural disasters worldwide further demonstrate why safety, prevention and resilience must remain central priorities for governments, businesses and institutions.
Connecting workplace safety with the UN Sustainable Development Goals
FFUN SDG's contribution placed workplace safety within the broader framework of the United Nations 2030 Agenda, focusing in particular on three Sustainable Development Goals:
SDG 4 – Quality Education
Education, vocational training and lifelong learning are essential tools for preventing workplace accidents, developing professional competencies and fostering a lasting culture of safety.
SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth
Safe, fair and dignified working conditions are fundamental to protecting human capital and promoting inclusive and sustainable economic growth.
SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals
Cooperation among businesses, public institutions, universities and international organisations is essential to transform sustainability commitments into concrete initiatives, shared knowledge and measurable results.
These priorities reflect FFUN SDG's commitment to connecting the principles of the 2030 Agenda with practical solutions that can be implemented in everyday organisational and business life.
FFUN SDG: Building bridges between sustainability, business and people
The Foundation for United Nations Sustainable Development Goals works to promote the principles of the United Nations 2030 Agenda by connecting institutions, businesses, universities and communities around practical initiatives for sustainable development.
FFUN SDG is a partner of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs – Sustainable Development (UNDESA), working to encourage international cooperation and translate the Sustainable Development Goals into opportunities for education, innovation and responsible economic development.
Participation in the NEW HSE conference represents an opportunity to strengthen dialogue between the sustainability community and professionals working in health, safety and environmental management. It also reinforces the Foundation's belief that sustainability must extend beyond environmental considerations to encompass human dignity, working conditions, education and corporate responsibility.
As underlined by Maurizio Aronica, building a sustainable business requires more than financial performance or formal compliance. It requires a genuine commitment to protecting the people who create value and to ensuring that economic progress goes hand in hand with responsibility.
Safety is not separate from sustainability. It is one of its essential foundations.
Through its international activities and partnerships, FFUN SDG will continue to promote cooperation and practical initiatives that bring together sustainable development, education, workplace safety and responsible business.
